We don’t have much information about the next Sonic game, but we do know that it will be exclusive to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS as part of a three-game deal between Sega and Nintendo.
That’s why it was surprising when Sonic-enthusiast website Spindash released an image (which I’ve verified is real with FotoForensics) from the Nuremberg Toy Fair in Germany that suggested the next game in the series would come out in 2015 on Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A few days after the news broke, Sega Senior Community Manager Kellie Parker wrote on the official Sega forums that the information was “incorrect”. SEGA has yet to announce details of upcoming console video games for Sonic the Hedgehog …” she wrote.
The exclusivity deal, which was announced last May, was said to include “the next three titles,” in the franchise. The first two games are already out: developer Sonic Team released Sonic: Lost World in October 2013 and Sega Sports Japan released Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games: Sochi 2014 a month later. The next game in the series, as detailed in the agreement, must be exclusive to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
It’s possible Sonic Team will be responsible for the third game; it spent a reported two and a half years developing Sonic: Lost World, which would line up with the reported 2015 release window.
Unless the Nintendo deal has been broken, Sega might be telling the truth when it says the information in the image is “incorrect.” It’s possible the PS4 and Xbox One logos on the sign were included in error. But the company will release its fiscal third quarter 2013 financials on Friday, and it might use that time to announce that a new Sonic game is in development.
